In Colour: Sustainable Transitions

By: Bethany Helaine Pöltl

I love being in the forest, surrounded by trees. Going for walks, hikes, wandering through the leaves and branches to find all the colour and wonder trees provide. This time of year is special, as the leaves change colour and the world transforms. I took these photos in the middle of these changes, to show the transition of one day to another. To think about how change can happen slowly, on a small scale, and then all at once. One day the leaves are green with colour beginning to touch the edges, then you turn around and entire canopies are red or yellow or orange, sometimes a mixture. I think this aptly reflects how we can change slowly, on a small scale, and then all at once, especially with making sustainable changes. Just starting somewhere, making a small change every day till you turn around and have integrated a sustainable mindset into your everyday life is how you can personally contribute to the greater goal of community and global sustainability. We are all leaves on the tree of life with the power and opportunity to evaluate our actions, use our voices and create change. Small at first, as we learn about sustainable actions, and then growing as one leaf, then as one tree, till the whole forest transitions to sustainability.
